What principles do you live by?

Being organised is the most essential principle for Mr. Godfrey Uwadia, and covers every aspect of his dealings. “An organised mind is clear, and can take actions with clear objectives. I encourage my staff to be as organised and as clear as possible by drawing up a work plan or calendar which includes all their activities for the day or week. I also encourage them to allocate time, and stick to their plan. We made this our New Year resolution last year and so far it has helped us be more productive and achieve better results.”

“‘Dedication’ to whatever I made a commitment to or have an obligation towards is my watchword,” says Chidera Obi. “I can also tie this up to being disciplined, because it is only when you are disciplined that you will have value for such things. As much as I can, I make an effort to live up to my responsibilities and fulfill all promises that I have made. I try to be dependable and do all my business, social and moral obligations punctually, honestly and honourably.”

Confidence is a shield, which Suleiman Ishaku never takes off. I am confident of myself and feel very good about the things I do. Anywhere I find myself and in whatever situation, I never let my guards down and express myself as confidently as possible. This gives an impression of me and it has always been great help. I learnt very early that presentation matters and since then I have decided that at all times I will present myself as a confident man.”

It goes without saying that the expression of appreciation is a guideline for life we should all abide by. For Ahmed Rafiu it is key. “I never fail to say ‘thank you’ or show appreciation when I receive a kind gesture no matter from whom. As often as is necessary, I tell people how much I appreciate them and also praise and complement them. I try to do more appreciating than fault finding. I also try to be a more giving than receiving person. It also makes me a more human and understanding person.”

Optimism is the only way you can forge ahead and live for tomorrow. If you feel dejected and pessimistic over situations, you are not likely to give yourself a chance at success because you won’t even try to find a solution. Brenda Aliu said: “I have learnt to leave my past failures in the past and focus positively on the future. I try to see challenges as halfway resolved rather than halfway unsolved. In addition, she says she is guided by her resolve to be a decisive person. “Generally I try to be eighty percent certain of whatever I am doing.  I place the extra twenty percent as a mixture of emotions based on both excitement and fear and usually let excitement win more times.”

No matter what our endeavors are in life from the above it is clear that we need to have a principle guiding us and one which impacts positively on our lives. What are yours and are you sticking to them?
