What does true happiness mean to you?

The struggle to find true happiness is a daily one for many people. And in the end, what you get would either make you truly happy or sad. But then what defines true happiness? LifeXtra finds out.

True happiness means different things to different people. Some may say it comes with true love; others however belong to a different school of thought.

To understand this, LifeXtra asked a cross-section of people to define what they understand by true happiness. The responses were interesting.

Jos-based social media marketer Benedict Benn Amama stated that true happiness is a state of mind that has total peace or at least peace.

“It is a state of calm that triggers other things like joy, contentment, love, care, satisfaction and other amazing qualities. True happiness is an inner quality. Money, power and possession cannot guarantee happiness,” he said.

Speaking further, he added “True Happiness is living in peace and harmony with your body, mind and soul. And also appreciating and loving yourself and others like family and friends.”

Victor Goni, who resides in Kano, reiterates that true happiness means no worry over everything.

When LifeXtra sought to know what he meant, he said “Happiness is actually an overrated word. What people mostly call happiness is actually ‘excitement’, so to me happiness is actually a state of having no emotional and mental burden to worry about – a state of absolute contentment.”

For Emmanuel Odeh, a student, true happiness means something different.

Speaking to LifeXtra, he said “To me, true happiness is when you are contented and satisfied. These include things that can make me happy like money and serving God. Without money, life can be frustrating and without God, Life would be meaningless.”

For Martha Edor, a Makurdi-based fashion designer, true happiness comes from enjoying one’s own company and living in peace and harmony with one’s mind and soul.

She said “In fact to be truly happy, you don’t need other people or material things. Happiness comes as a result of your personal effort and living a purposeful life.”

“In my view, true happiness is about being joyful, being your real self and not pretending. For instance, when some issues arise, a person who is always at peace would easily come up with a solution because of his/her state of mind,” says Lami Jonathan, a mother of two.

She added “Some of the other things that can guarantee true happiness include being happy and contented, having a good job and a good relationship with your creator.”

According to elitedaily.com, the article “What Does Happiness Mean To You? 6 Ways To Reach A Positive State Of Mind”, written by Rajeet Singh, it states “The crux of the matter is, you are the master of your own happiness. You have control over whether or not you are content and joyous, or discontent and dissatisfied.”

“Love, laugh and appreciate what you have. This one is very important. We only get one shot at life; we’re on this planet once and for a finite amount of time. Do as much as you can to make yourself happy. Laugh as much as you can (studies show it’s good for your health), learn as much as you can and love without restriction,” the article added.
