The brand new Tour in Nigeria, The West Africa Golf Tour, will tee off today at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.
The Tour which promises a tournament every month with prize money of $50,000 per tourney moved above all expectations when close to 100 professionals paid up an entry fee of N120,000 per head to participate. A total 25 professionals entered from Ghana alone.
In the amateur cadre, a similar success story was recorded when over 250 amateur golfers entered for the first game of the Tour. In order not to flood the course, the Tour management organized a qualifying round for the amateurs where some 150 qualified to play in the Tour proper.
“We knew this Tour will record a massive success”, the Tour’s Tournament Director, Tony Uduimoh disclosed.
“But nobody predicted this instant success where the first leg of this Tour was over-subscribed. I can tell you that so many entries that came a bit late could not be processed. These sets of pros were only advised to wait for the second leg that would hold at the Smoking Hills Golf course at Ilara Mokin, Ondo State. This one will happen between March 3 and 6,” Uduimoh added.
At the moment, all preparations for the Ilara Mokin event have been concluded. Uduimoh who earlier visited the course to ensure course markings and placement of Tee boxes confirmed that many people from the sleepy town are eagerly awaiting the arrival of over 300 golfers that would set alight the town and boost several commercial activities.
“The hoteliers are here are already counting their blessings”, Uduimoh stated. “Everyone is really waiting for the boom that will hit the town next week. Even the owner of the course, Chief Michael Ade-Ojo is allowing the Tour some concessions. The man was indeed delighted that his place is being mentioned as venue in all our advertisements on Supersports Channels. He agreed that this was a boost for his golf course, his home town and indeed his people”.
