The Managing Director of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), Engr Aliyu Tahir, has said the agency will inspect electric vehicles being imported into the country to ensure they satisfy the required standards.

He stated this Tuesday when he led the management team of NEMSA to the headquarters of Media Trust Group in Abuja.

He said the purpose of the visit was to explore partnerships in sensitising Nigerians on safety standards in the electricity sector.

Speaking on the agency’s mandate, he said, “Nigeria’s electricity sector has been electrified, which is why the agency has concluded plans to ensure that the Electrical Vehicles (EV) imported into the country are inspected and certified to be of the required standards and also ensure that the charging points across the country are well equipped and effective.”

While clarifying its functions with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), he said, “The SON is the body saddled with the regulation of standards across the country, while our agency which was established by the NEMSA Act 2015 and (Electricity Act 2023) is statutory saddled with the responsibility to carry out the functions of enforcement of technical standards, technical inspection, testing and certification of all categories of electrical installations, among others.”

He also announced that, “NEMSA will soon sign a memorandum of understanding as a follow up to its partnership as part of efforts to be at the entry points of Nigerian ports to inspect all electrical goods as they are entering the country,”

Speaking on what the agency was doing to address the incessant grid collapse, he said whenever the grid collapsed it carried out investigation and sent recommendations to the appropriate authorities for further action, while calling on Nigerians to alert the agency on any sharp practices that concerned electrical appliances across the country.

In his remarks, the Deputy Editor-in-Chief (Digital and Print) of Media Trust Group, Dr Maude Gwadabe, who welcomed the NEMSA management, noted that the company had a long-term relationship with the agency, adding that it would continue to partner in the area of sensitising Nigerians in line with the mandate and operations of NEMSA.

Also speaking, the Assistant General Manager, Special Projects, Media Trust Group, Abdullahi Mainasara, said the company had transformed into a media conglomerate comprising of television, radio, newspaper and the digital platforms, adding that, “The company has proposed areas of partnerships which will aid in disseminating vital information across all its platforms to Nigerians.”
