‘We need new constitution, amendments can’t solve our problems’

Nigeria as a country could be divided if nothing was done

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mike Ozekhome, has told the National Assembly to midwife a new constitution for Nigeria, subject to the referendum of the people.

He argued that Nigeria currently operates under a “suffocative system,” adding that “one million amendments to the Nigerian constitution can’t solve the problems confronting the country.”

Ozekhome said this in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during the Ladi Adebutu Good Governance Symposium held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.

The symposium, with the title, “Local Government Autonomy: A panacea for National Development,” was organised in honour of a former governorship aspirant, Oladipupo Adebutu.

He also declared that Nigeria as a country could be divided if nothing was done to change the current situation of things.
