We have serious gaps in skills sector – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, says there are some serious gaps in the skills sector which Nigeria has not done enough to address them.

He spoke in Abuja Thursday at the 7th series of the industry stakeholders’ consultation meeting, with the theme ‘Skills for Economic Property’, supported by GIZ.

Osinbajo, represented by the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said: “There’s a gap between policy makers and those who actually drive the policy during project implementation.

“Our purpose should be to assess gaps using what we believe are the solutions.”

Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education, Prof. Idris Bugaje, Thursday canvassed that the Industrial Training Fund and the National Directorate of Employment be merged to establish National Skills Fund (NSF) to address demands for the emerging skills for the economy of the new millennium.

He said the ITF and the NDE were duplicates and losing focus from their earlier mandates.

“They should be merged or harmonized into a new platform on a new paradigm, to be known as National Skills Fund to become the leading NSQ training funding providers including Students’ SIWES Funding.”
