Arewa youth, Reps demand action on ‘death threats’ against EFCC boss

Arewa Youth Assembly ready to fight anyone threatening Bawa, Reps demand threats not be ignored

Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) says it is ready to fight anybody threatening the Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Abdulrasheed Bawa.

It comes days after Bawa said he had been receiving death threats from high-profile figures since he became head of the anti-graft agency.

The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives on Thursday called on the federal government not to ignore the death threats.

At a press conference, speaker of the  Arewa Youth Assembly, Mohammed Salihu Danlami, said Bawa must not be deterred from doing the right thing.

“Any attack or threat on the Chairman is a threat on us and we will be forced to investigate who made the threat and will use the law to deal with the person directly to act as deterrence to any other person nursing such thought,” he said.

“This threat should not be taken for granted. We as Youths of this country have shown our support and respect for the Chairman from when he was appointed and we are ready to stand behind him to accomplish his task”.

The group stressed that threatening the EFCC Boss is a setback in the fight against corruption adding, “Money meant for infrastructure, health, education, roads, etc has over the years been embezzled by few individuals. As concerned Nigerians, our objectives and mission is to see how to end corruption in Nigeria.”

“Don’t ignore death threats against EFCC chairman”

The minority caucus in a statement signed by the House Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu has called the death threats “disturbing”.

Elumelu said the silence smacks of an attempt to shield corrupt officials within its system, and the federal government will be held responsible if any harm befall the EFCC Chairman.

“Our caucus calls on the EFCC Chairman to go public and expose the names of those threatening him as well as issues of corruption involving such individuals.

“We also demand an immediate investigation into the revelation as such threats on the life of the EFCC Chairman cannot be glossed over,” the Caucus urged.
