Water Resources Bill will tackle Nigeria’s water challenges – Official

Ajisegiri said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
“If that bill is quickly finalised and moved to the National Assembly and if it is passed, I can bet you that our water resources sector in Nigeria will be one of the best in the world,” he said.
The head of the Public Private Partnership unit said that the bill contained issues concerning the regulation of water resources.
“We also have the aspect of licensing the water users and you can see that borehole drilling that is being proliferated will be controlled. So, that will preserve our aquifer system.”
It will be recalled that the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, in collaboration with the European Union (EU), recently organised a stakeholders` workshop on National Water Resources Bill.
The workshop served as a platform for wider consultation on the law, which is expected to guide water resources development, management, utilisation and conservation, among other things.
Speaking at the workshop, the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, said that a legal framework was an essential component of the country’s supply and sanitation reform programme that would be deployed for the development of the sector. (NAN)
