The Senate will screen Justice Walter Onnoghen as substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) after acting in same capacity for over three months.

Senate President Bukola Saraki who announced the screening during yesterday’s plenary asked Senators to be available for the exercise.

Onnoghen has been acting since November following the retirement of Justice Mahmud Mohammed.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended Onnoghen for the CJN seat in November. Our correspondent reports that the Council extended his acting appointment in February following the delay in transmission of his confirmation request to the Senate.

Our correspondent reports that the acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo sent the request for the confirmation of Onnoghen to the Senate on February 7, this year.
