The district head of Waru, Chief Ibrahim A. Sarki has said the lack of a police outpost in about 17 communities that make up the district poses security threats to the residents.
He said the only police presence in the communities is an outpost in Pigba. He said the police outpost, a ‘container,’ is not enough to ensure the safety of thousands of the residents in the 17 communities.
Some of the communities affected set up vigilante groups while several of the communities that could not afford the services of the vigilante groups are left at the mercy of criminals.
He said many criminals take advantage of the situation to unleash terror on the residents of Wasa. He listed some of the communities in his domain to include Waru, Wasa, Pigba and Chafi.
“Waru community is very large and I have tried to make sure we have a police outpost but I have not been successful,” he said.
He said the community had wanted to build a police outpost but stopped “because the area was too congested.”
While appealing to the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Mustafa and the FCT Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, to look into the situation, he explained that the presence of policemen in most cases scares hoodlums from committing certain crimes.
He also said secondary school students in the community trek over long distance to reach their schools.
He said the students endure the scorching sun and sometimes heavy rainfall on a deplorable road to secondary schools in Kabusa or Garki Resettlement area.
He explained that the establishment of a secondary school in the community would save the students at least three hours trek; encourage parents to enroll their children in school; and also enhance students’ academic performance.
He also want the government to take responsibility for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) residing in the community.
“There are many internally displaced persons in the community, who I am responsible for their upkeep. I give them accommodation and pay for their school fees,” he said.
He said the government should do something about the situation as the number of IDPs in the community keeps increasing.
“Though I know the government cannot do everything at once, I would want them to begin work on the community road,” he said.
He added that though a corps member is trying to construct culvert and tar the road he appealed to the government to also do something about it.
