The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced plans to improve the assessment process for candidates with special needs, aiming to implement significant changes by 2025.
Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of the National Office, stated this during a media briefing, highlighting the challenges faced by candidates with special needs in the current assessment system.
“We are enhancing how candidates access our services and increasing our efforts to improve their experience. Currently, there are limited provisions for candidates with special needs, but we are committed to taking this further,” he said.
Dr. Dangut explained that WAEC is seeking funding to launch a pilot project that will introduce innovative assessment methods tailored to these candidates.
“We are working to secure resources for a pilot programme that will showcase the appropriate methods for assessing candidates with severe special needs,” he noted.
The initiative also includes collaboration to adapt the educational curriculum for students with special needs, ensuring it is more inclusive.
“The current curriculum does not adequately address some severe special needs. We are working with stakeholders to design a comprehensive programme that incorporates modern teaching and assessment techniques,” he added.
