WAEC releases 2021 WASSCE results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the 2021 Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE).

The head of WAEC in Nigeria, Patrick Areghan, made this announcement in a Statement on Monday.

Areghan disclosed that a total of 1,573,849 candidates registered for WASSCE across 19,425 approved secondary schools in the country while 1,560,261 actually sat for the exam.

According to him, 1,274,784 of the candidates got credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, while 1,560,261 candidates obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects — that is with or without English Language and Mathematics.

He also said results of 170,146 candidates were seized for alleged involvement in exam malpractices.

He added that WAEC has already processed and released the results of 1,256,990 candidates, which represents 80.56% of those who sat for the exam in Nigeria.

Areghan also said that WAEC is still processing the results of 303,271 candidates, which represents 19.44% of the total figure that took the exam in the country.

He explained the reason for the delay due to the fact that some of candidates have issues with their subjects.

He also disclosed that the result checker pin and serial number that candidates need to check their results online are already contained in the candidate smart identity card that was used for the exam.

“The examination, which was an international one, took place simultaneously throughout the five-member countries of the Council – The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone, using the same International Timetable.

“The examination spanned seven weeks, between August 16 and October 8, 2021. Throughout the period, we were faced with serious security challenges in the South East (IPOB and ESN sit-at-home order) and banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, etc, in the north and other parts of the country. All these, coupled with the continuous effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic, made the whole exercise a Herculean one.”
