Voters grumble over faulty card reader, as Sanwo-Olu calls for improvement

Some of the voters who turned out to participate in Saturday’s polls complained about the malfunctioning of the card reader deployed for accreditation process at the polling unit 090, Ikoyi in Eti-Osa Local Government, Lagos.

The voters’ complaint began when some of them could not be accredited as a result of the card reader rejecting their thumb verification.

Among those affected were the Lagos State gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Babajide Sanwo-Olu who was eventually asked to thumb-print to pass the accreditation stage.

According to Sanwo-Olu, whereas the process has so far been peaceful, the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC) will still need to up its game and to meet challenges in future elections.

“Although, it took them a while to set up their facilities, but so far I think the performance has been good, above average.

“From what I have seen, I am impressed. But I’m sure they can do better some other time. The people have so far been patient and the process has so far been peaceful,” Sanwo-Olu said.

On the chances of its party’s candidates, the governorship candidate said as a card-carrying member of APC, he is no doubt optimistic of the party’s success at the poll.

Daily Trust correspondents at the polling unit observed that an ad-hoc staff of INEC handling the card-reader had to constantly pacify some of the voters who were agitated about their inabilities to be accredited and proceed to vote.

A voter who identified himself as Jibrin Abass lamented that despite arriving early for the voting, the INEC card-reader has not been able to clear him for registration.

He said he was told to go and clean his fingers before returning for accreditation.

He expressed regret that after cleaning his fingers, he was still not accredited. He was however called to thumb-print and cast his vote.
