A former governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Martin Elechi, on Thursday said non-adherence to political parties’ constitutions is one of the major challenges facing the nation’s democracy.
Elechi, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the assertion in Abakaliki on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting of the party in the state.
He said chieftains of both PDP and APC are guilty of non-adherence to their parties’ constitutions.
“All I can say is that in the fourth republic, the major problem of political parties is the failure to respect and comply with the provisions of the political parties’ constitutions.
‘When I left PDP, after handing over in 2015, it was not for any other thing but abuse of party constitution.
“Coming to APC, I thought things would be different but like what American Blacks say, “you ain’t seen nothing yet”.
“So when we go back we have to look at the area of principal officers of the party.
“When you look back to the 2019 elections, you will weep for this country. It showed we have no regards for political parties and for the nation.
“Many people are in grief as a result of the way they were treated in the ward primaries and state; we did not respect the constitution of the party.
“The people that were declared winners in many places were not candidates in those places,” he said.
