A joint team of vigilantes and hunters on Sunday foiled the kidnap of travellers at Ahoko Bridge, on the ever busy Abuja-Lokoja Highway.
A member of the vigilantes, who was part of the joint operation but prefers anonymity, said the two suspected kidnappers were arrested.
He said the kidnappers ambushed travellers at a sharp bend a few metres away from the bridge when the combined team of the vigilantes and hunters arrived.
“Actually, we were on patrol when two among the kidnappers suddenly appeared and attempted to open fire on a vehicle and we immediately engaged them,” he said.
He said the two kidnappers attempted to escape after their guns could not respond but they were arrested.
“But the other gang members hiding inside the bush close to the road side escaped when they discovered that two of their members were arrested,” he said.
The vigilante member said the two kidnappers had been handed over to security agents in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, along with two guns recovered from the kidnappers, even as he said the team had been combing the forest around the area to trace their hideout.
The Kogi State commander of the hunters’ group, Hassan Yakubu, confirmed the arrest of the two suspects at Ahoko, saying they had been handed over to security agents.
The spokesman of the Kogi State Police Command, CSP Williams Ovye Aya, was yet to answer calls or reply to a text message sent him about the incident.
