During the couple’s conversation, the thespian asked his wife, “So Mrs O, we are celebrating 24 years of marriage. What are your keys to marital success?”

With smiles on her face, his wife, Jessica, emphasized that communication and honesty are key to a successful marriage.

Jessica replied, “Communicate, communicate, communicate. Honesty, honesty, honesty. Even if it hurts. Know when to keep your mouth shut. Know when to say what needs to be said and always do it with love.”

While in alignment with his wife’s opinion, David further added, “I would say most of what you just said. Don’t let the sun go down on your hurts. Never go to bed without clearing out an argument. The word sorry is a very useful one.”

His wife further chipped in that couples should learn how to apologise to each other. “Always try to be the first one to say sorry. Make it a sorry competition.”

The Oyelowos also revealed that they are devout Christians and that having God in their life has been a major positive factor in their marriage.

“The marriage is the centre, kids are welcome to your family that you already are. The couple is the family but the kids are a welcome addition. It helps that we are believers. We believe in God and that means that there are three people in our relationship — the wife, husband and God.

“This means that we do not rely on each other for an identity. It is a very useful thing. When you don’t get everything you need from your spouse, which happens. You get happy feeling loved from above rather than draining the other person for things they cannot give because they are not able to,” the Oyelowos said.
