US embassy announces new changes for Nigerian visa applicants

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has announced changes to its immigration visa process, effective from January 1, 2025.

In a statement posted on its official X page on Tuesday, the embassy outlined new procedures for applicants with interviews scheduled after that date.

The embassy stated, “For applicants with interviews scheduled after January 1, 2025, you are required to visit the Consulate General in Lagos at least twice during the immigrant visa process.”

The directive explained that this updated process is intended “to help you prepare for your visa interview and to prevent significant delays in processing your immigrant visa.”

Further details provided on the embassy’s website revealed that the first visit to the US Consulate in Lagos will be for an “In-Person Document Review” with a consular staff member. The embassy clarified, “This review ensures that applicants are prepared for their visa interviews.”

Additionally, the embassy highlighted that this review will allow applicants to “retrieve any missing documents ahead of their visa interviews, helping to avoid delays in application processing.”

The second visit, which is an actual interview, will take place with a Consular Officer. The embassy explained, “The date for this interview will be scheduled for applicants by the National Visa Center (NVC).”

Importantly, the embassy noted, “If you do not complete the In-Person Document Review before your visa interview, you will be required to reschedule your appointment.”

In July 2024, the embassy also announced a change in visa services, revealing that a new visa services provider would take over operations at its Abuja and Lagos consulates starting August 26, 2024.

This change was confirmed on the embassy’s official website and verified social media channels.
