Amateur golfers, Unyime Okon and Helen Ayo have emerged champions of the 2021 Daily Trust Golf Tournament in the male and female categories respectively.

The one day tournament which was held at the Ibom Golf Icon Club, Uyo, Akwa Ibom had 109 male and five female golfers playing on the lush green 18 hole course.

Interestingly, all the five female golfers won different prizes for their efforts.

Okon emerged the overall best male winner after posting a gross score of 5, net score of 73 and handicap score of 78 while Helen emerged the overall best female winner after posting a gross score of 92, net score of  78 and handicap score of 14.

Speaking to Daily Trust, an elated 29-year-old Okon said he was delighted to win the tournament and is excited about the opportunity to travel to Rwanda.

“I have been playing golf for so many years now. I have played in many tournaments and I am so glad to win this one.  This is a dream come true for me. I can’t imagine this but to God be the glory. I look forward to going to Rwanda,” he said.

In the same vein, Helen also expressed joy over her victory in the female category.

“I am happy to have won this tournament. I am so excited about it. I appreciate Daily Trust for this opportunity,” she said. 

Also, speaking during the awards ceremony, the Chairman, Media Trust Limited, Malam Kabiru Yusuf, hailed the management of Ibom Golf Icon Club for the world class facility and successful hosting of the tournament.

“I have played in several courses in Nigeria and I can say this is the best course in West Africa. The greenish nature of the course is breathtaking.

Daily Trust has done a few tournaments. We have done this in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and now we are in Akwa Ibom so as to extend our presence beyond Abuja to our brothers in this part of the country,” he said. 

Meanwhile, the two winners are set for an all expenses paid golfing weekend in Kigali, a 3 night stay in 5 star Marriot Kigali hotel, 2 rounds of golf at the Premier 18-hole Kigali Golf Club and business round-trip on Abuja Kigali ticket on Rwand Air.
