Uniuyo shuts down hostels over death of student

The management of the University of Uyo has ordered all students living in the hostels to vacate the premises till further notice over the death of a student.

A statement issued on Friday by the Registrar of the University, Mr Aniediabasi Udofia, urged students whose academic activities were still running to do so from their respective homes.

One student was reportedly killed, while another was shot in the town campus of the university in a supremacy battle between two rivals cult groups.

It was gathered that the incident started on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, when a 300- level student in the Geography Department, Faculty of Social Sciences, was killed by suspected cultists.

It was learnt that the rival cult group launched a reprisal attack the next day against Fine Arts Department, leading to one of the students being shot and others injured.

A source who chose to remain unnamed said, “A student from the Department of Geography was killed on Tuesday.

“But, on Wednesday around 5 pm, we heard gunshots in the Department of Fine Art and on getting there, discovered that a student was shot.

“He was said to have been rushed to an undisclosed hospital where he is undergoing treatment.”
