Aviation workers under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) has welcomed the intervention of the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) in the ailing Aero Contractors, the oldest airline in Nigeria.
AMCON, which is the majority shareholder in the company, had on Friday dissolved the board of the airline and appointed a new Managing Director in a drive to reposition it.
The decisions came many weeks after the airline had been engaged in a battle with aviation unions, including the Air Transport Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSAN).
The erstwhile management of Aero had suspended chairmen of the NUATE and ATSSSAN branches of the company for “granting press interviews”. Based on the suspension, the national leadership of the two unions stormed the organization in protest.
However, with another management in place, it was reliably gathered that the suspended workers might be recalled as part of move to bring about peace and stability to the company.
The acting Secretary-General of NUATE, Comrade Olayinka Abioye told the Daily Trust yesterday that the union welcomes the intervention of AMCON.
Abioye urged the new management to address the concerns of workers, reconcile all the aggrieved parties and bring all the unions together from time to time in a bid to reposition the airline.
He expressed confidence that the move by AMCON would go a long way in restoring the lost glory of the airline within a few years.
Aero Contractors was taken over five years ago by AMCON, which has a 60 per cent stake in the company, while the remaining share is held by the Ibru family.
