Unijos bow to students, cuts new hostel fee by 50%

Management of the University of Jos has succumbed to the demand of the Students Union Government (SUG) and agreed to resolve their dispute over new hostel fees amicably.

The 100 per cent increment in hostels fee of the institution earlier proposed by management has therefore been reduced to 50 per cent in line with the proposal of the SUG.

The students earlier vowed never to accept the proposal of the management and threatened to shut the institution if management insisted.

Confirming the resolution to Benue/Plateau Trust on phone in Jos, the President of the SUG, Comrade Danladi Adankala, said “We have resolved the issue with management.

“The proposal of the management was to increase the hostel fee by 100 per cent, but we rejected their proposal and we told them clearly why such increment will not work.

“Instead, we submitted a 50 per cent upward review to them for consideration. We met, we discussed and they found reasons in our proposal and management agreed with us,” he said.

The Deputy Registrar, Information and Protocol, Abdullahi Abdullahi, who also confirmed to Benue/Plateau Trust noted that the dispute has been resolved amicably.

He said: “I can confirm to you that the issue has been resolved and the students have started paying for their accommodation based on the wish of the students since last week.”

The new fees range from N21,000 to N95,000.
