UNICEF, Unilever target 3m youths for empowerment

Unilever Nigeria and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have launched an entrepreneurship and empowerment programme targeting three million Nigerian youth.

The Future-X Campus Ambassadors Program (FUCAP) was unveiled in Lagos yesterday to equip the youth between the ages of 16 and 24 with the requisite skills to succeed in the workplace of the future by 2026.

While three million youths are targeted with the programme, no fewer than 700,000 would be equipped within the next three years.

Managing Director, Unilever Nigeria, Tim Kleinebenne, at a press conference in Lagos explained that the initiative is a train-the-trainer programme to bridge the skill gaps among Nigerian youths.

He said, “FUCAP is targeted at students in universities and polytechnics across Nigeria. This is part of our commitment to helping young people in Nigeria reach their full potential and contribute to the development of Nigeria.”

The FUCAP initiative was launched on UNICEF’s Yoma and U-Report Platforms, a youth-centred platform, to ensure an extensive reach of young people in universities and other institutions of higher learning across Nigeria.

UNICEF Nigeria Representative, Cristian Munduate, stated that the initiative focuses on developing critical 21st-century skills for young people.

Expressing UNICEF’s interest in the programme, he said “We look forward to seeing the positive impact this programme will have on the lives of youths across Nigeria in helping them succeed in the workplace and contribute to the economic growth of their communities.”
