About 47 percent of girl child in Ebonyi state are undergoes female genital mutilation,FGM, practice.

The United Nations Children Fund, Enugu Chief Field Officer, Mr. Ibrahim Conteh disclosed this while marking this year  International day of zero tolerance for female genital mutilation in Abakaliki.

Mr. Conteh noted that data was record available to UNICEF in 2017 which indicate sharp drop of about 20 percent in 2011.

"The 2011 research indicated about 62.3 percent but in 2017 we had 47.2 percent, indicating sharp drop of 20 percent from the original data, he said.

 

Mr. Conteh however noted that eradicating female genital mutilation needs a holistic approach which he said include the political power.

Also, the state governor, David Umahi said that laws against female genital mutilation would soon be signed.

He added that some grey areas might be amended.

Female genital mutilation is a pet project of the wife of the Ebonyi state governor, Mrs Rachael Umahi under her family succour up-liftment foundation programme.
