A 22-year-old undergraduate, identified as Caleb Obasogi has killed his 55-year-old mother, Josephine Igbineweka over alleged refusal to give him money.
The incident was said to have happened at about 8am on Thursday at her residence at 31A, Iyamu Street, off Textile Mill Road, Benin City, Edo State.
Caleb was alleged to have locked himself and his mother in a room in their apartment and used a broken bottle to stab and ripped her stomach before neighbours could rescue her.
It was learnt that the night before the incident, the suspect locked the deceased outside for not giving him the money he demanded and had to pass the night in a neighbour’s house.
It was also gathered that Caleb is a final year education student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) while his mother was a relaxation joint operator.
Speaking to journalists, a woman who claimed to have accommodated the deceased over night when she was locked out described the incident as horrible, saying the deceased was already dead before people arrived there.
Some of the deceased children at the Textile Mill Road police division where the suspect was being interrogated declined comments.
The Edo State Police Command Public Relations officer, DSP Moses Nkombe, confirmed the killing.
