UN to hold special session on drugs Apr 2016

Worried by the increasing drug problem worldwide including consumption and trafficking, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGASS) would in April next year, hold a Special Session on the response to the world drug problem.
Prof. Isidore S. Obot, Director, Centre for Research and Information on Substance Abuse (CRISA), made the revelation at the opening of the 2nd National Symposium on Drugs and Drugs Policy in Nigeria held in Abuja.
He said the symposium, which seeks ways of responding effectively to our drug problem through appropriate policy frameworks, is to assist participants to perform better in what it is they do in drug demand reduction.
“Today Nigeria is faced with a significant problem of use and misuse of a wide variety of psychoactive substances with the potential of causing a host of negative consequences to the individual, family, community and society at large,” he said.
Ag. European Union Head of Cooperation, Juan Urteaga-Casla, in his remarks, said the project “Response to drugs and related crime in Nigeria” was funded by EU with 36 million euro and implemented by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) over a period of 5 years.
