Muslim News Nigeria, a leading Islamic newspaper in Nigeria, has urged the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), and the United States (US) to continue mounting pressure on Israel to end the ongoing war in Gaza.
The medium made the call in a statement issued by its publisher, Rasheed Abubakar, to commemorate the 2024 World Press Freedom Day, under the theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis.”
The Nigerian-based media outlet underscored the environmental impact of the seven-month-long conflict, warning of its potential to cause a myriad of health issues such as respiratory diseases, heart ailments, and cancer.
These health risks, he said, stem from the hazardous substances released during bombings and the collapse of Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure.

Abubakar paid tribute to more than 100 journalists and media personnel, many of whom were Palestinian citizens, tragically killed in Israel’s assaults on Gaza.
Furthermore, the publication honoured Wael Hamdan Ibrahim Al-Dahdouh, the Bureau Chief of Al Jazeera (Arabic) in Gaza City, by naming him the “Global Muslim Media Personality of the Year 2023.”
This recognition celebrates Al-Dahdouh’s unwavering dedication and resilience in reporting on the Gaza genocide, despite personal loss and immense challenges, he said.
