UMYU hosts 2nd international renewable energy conference, advocates clean energy solutions

The Ibrahim Shehu Shema Centre for Renewable Energy Research (ISSCeRER), Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, in collaboration with the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), has inaugurated its 2nd International Renewable Energy Conference.

With the theme “Clean Energy Transition: Accelerating Sustainable Development Goals through Renewable Technologies” the event attracted local and international experts.

In his opening address, UMYU Vice Chancellor, Professor Shehu Salihu Muhammad, underscored the urgent need for action on climate change, likening humanity’s inaction to “sitting on a keg of gunpowder.”

He commended ISSCeRER for organizing the conference, describing it as a platform to foster innovative solutions against climate threats.

“Our goal is to empower participants to develop feasible strategies for reducing greenhouse gases, advancing smart grids, and enhancing energy-efficient infrastructure,” Professor Muhammad stated, urging attendees to share ideas openly for lasting impact.

In his goodwill message, Dr. Ahmed Galadima Aminu, Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), represented by Mr Mannir Abubakar, the head of strategic planning of the fund, praised the conference’s focus, highlighting PTDF’s commitment to renewable energy initiatives.

Dr. Aminu noted that the PTDF has been a longstanding supporter of ISSCeRER, contributing to its establishment in 2012 to drive clean energy research.

He reiterated PTDF’s dedication to fostering indigenous competencies in energy technology, adding, “This conference is essential in helping Nigeria develop and implement sustainable solutions.”

In his speech while declaring the conference open, Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina state, represented by his S.A. Power, Dr Hafiz Ibrahim, reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring safer environment.

“Part of the modest contributions of this government in attaining a clean energy and a habitable environment is embracing renewable energy for the development of our people.

“Our aim is to ‘decarbonize the electricity sector in phases such that by 2030 we can be safe to say we have attained 300MW of installed capacity, of which 90% will be renewable energy

“As a government, we have set up machineries in motion, including energy transition plans to achieve net zero emissions by 2060, passage of the required bills, and have already committed humungous resources, all geared towards a single purpose, which is clean renewable energy,” Gov Radda has said.

The event was also supported by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI); Univerite Dan Dicko Dankoulood De Maradi and Centre Polytechnique Mazayaki De Dosso from the Republic of Niger.
