The Usman Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, UDUTH, Sokoto in collaboration with the university and the National Association of Urological Surgeons (NAUS) is conducting free urological surgeries in the state.
Daily Trust learnt that this is the first time complicated surgeries are being conducted in the hospital since the establishment of its urology centre.
According to the Head of the Urological department, Professor Isma’ila Mungadi, the operations were part of activities outlined for the 24th annual general meeting and scientific conference of NAUS.
“This is a milestone as we will help the country save huge amount of money spent on medical tourism abroad,” he said.
He explained that the surgery costs N3 million per patient but that it is being offered free.
He said they had so far conducted four surgeries including kidney stone removal and some complex cases.
Mungadi added that they targeted 16 patients who would be operated in two days.
He noted that about N20 million was earmarked for the conference which attracted urologists from across the country and experts from abroad.
“I am assuring you that our people no longer need to travel abroad to treat urological cases unless for vacation because we are having state of the art equipment and we can manage our patients very well,” he said.
He called on the governments and philanthropists to support the hospital in reducing the cost of urological treatment as some patients could not afford it.
