Students of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) have mourned the death of a visually impaired beggar, Muhammadu Bello.
He was said to be among the casual labourers that built some of the earliest structures in the school, but lost his sight before the school started academic activities in 1978.
Hundreds of students gathered on a hollow foot bridge to mark the one year remembrance of the death of the beggar, popularly referred to as Baba Jatau. The foot bridge is fondly referred to as Jatau. The students had deferred lectures on the day and clad in tattered clothes like a beggar’s, mimicking Jatau’s unique style of begging saying “Kabani Sadaka”.
