Polls: Two women shot in Bayelsa Deputy gov’s home town

Two women have sustained gunshot injuries during a violence that broke out in Ofoni Ward, the home town of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa state, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

An eyewitness, who is a voter at the polling unit, told Daily Trust that three irate youths from the community had shot a lady over some misunderstanding, which stalled the ongoing election process in the area.

According to him, the bullet hit another middle-aged woman who was rushed to a nearby clinic for treatment.

Two of the three thugs, who masterminded the uproar, were said to have been apprehended by the crowd and handed over to security personnel.

As of the time of this report, the two suspects had been remanded at the Ofoni Police Station while the two ladies were receiving treatment.

Voting process which had started earlier was stalled as voters scampered for safety as some INEC officials took cover.

Voting at the GSS Ofoni has since resumed peacefully as the deputy governor cast his vote at Ward 2, Unit 6, in Ofoni.

He urged the electorate to be peaceful and orderly, noting that a credible process would ensure better development.

Police spokesman in Bayelsa State, SP Asinim Butswat, did not pick our correspondent’s calls as of the time of filing this report.
