Two nabbed over attempt to swindle 60-year-old of N600,000 in Lagos

Detectives from Lagos State Police Command have arrested two members of a gang of fraudsters over an attempt to swindle a 60-year-old woman of N600,000.

The suspects, Uche Awaiz, 45; and Osadebe Aigbe, 35, had allegedly collected the sum of N90,000 and were on the verge of collecting another N600,000 when they were apprehended.

It was learnt that the suspects had followed the victim to a bank in Ogudu, where she had gone to make the withdrawal. It was gathered that the victim while trying to do the withdrawal was fidgeting, which drew the attention of one of the cashiers to her situation. On inquiring, she alleged that she had been asked not to engage anyone in any discussion and that failure of which would lead to her death.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on his Twitter handle, said the incident happened on Friday evening. Hundeyin said that at about 3:50 pm, a bank cashier noticed that a 64-year-old customer was fidgety while receiving repeated calls.

He said the cashier noticed that the lady was in a hurry to withdraw N600,000. “The cashier asked what the problem was and the woman said she would die if she talked.

“Police officers from Ogudu Division were quickly contacted. Two out of the three fraudsters waiting outside were arrested. They are Uche Awaize , aged 45 and Osadebe Aigbe,’ aged 35. The third suspect bolted.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects had first collected N90,000 from the woman. An effort is on to arrest the other gang member,” he added.
