Two inmates of Nigerian Correctional Center in Ile-Ife, Osun State, were killed while others sustained injuries during a jailbreak on Tuesday.

Daily Trust learnt that during a routine open-out of inmates for daily exercises, the inmates in a particular cell attacked the officers on duty and succeeded in breaking out more inmates from other cells.

Having overpowered the officers due to their large number, the inmates surged to the main gate in a bid to break out from jail.

The Controller of Corrections in the state, Olanrewaju Amoran, confirmed the death of the inmates.

Speaking through Command Public Relations Officer, Olusola Adeotan, the Controller said, “The ensuing confrontation between the escaping inmates and the armed personnel on guard duty resulted in four of the inmates being immobilised.”

He said the inmates were taken to hospital for medical attention and that two of the injured inmates lost their lives while the remaining two were receiving treatment.

Amoran added that normalcy had returned to the yard and that the inmates were kept in safe custody while investigation was ongoing.
