Gunmen suspected to be bandits have killed two officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in Kadobe village, Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Sources said the officers lost their lives during an exchange of gunfire in the early hours of Thursday.

“The village has never been attacked in the past as a result of the NIS base, so the area was safe for a lot of herdsmen who migrated to the place with their animals.”

“There were failed attempts by the gunmen to attack the place, but unfortunately they attacked last night around 12:05 am and in their attempt to repel the attack, the immigration officers engaged them in a gun duel, as a result of which two lost their lives,” a source said.

Sources confirmed that several of the bandits were also killed and many sustained gunshot injuries, but they were able to escape with the bodies of their dead members.

“Soldiers who were in patrol on the streets had rushed to the area in reinforcement and there was serious gunfire exchange, in which one soldier was shot on his thigh, and is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina,” the source added

A security operative, who craved for anonymity, said one of the officers killed, Umar Bagadaza Kankara, has already been buried in his hometown of Kankara, while the other, Lauwali Dutse, has been taken to his home town, Dutse in Jigawa state for burial.

When contacted, NIS spokesman in the state, Illyasu Kasimu, said he was not authorised to speak on the matter.
