Kano state government has commenced distribution of assorted farm inputs and a high yielding, pest resistant seedlings to the tomato farmers whose crops were ravaged by tuta absoluta in 2016.
The initiative was to cushion the effect of the loss suffered by the farmers and to also enable them to stay afloat in their farming businesses this farming season.
The state governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje kicked-off the distribution of the items to the farmers at the flag off ceremonies of the 2018 farming season at Bagauda, Bebeji local government.
The governor who was represented at median event by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Usman Ahaji, said the inputs cost the state government over N255m.
Other farmers that would benefit from government’s inputs intervention were the famers from Watari irrigation project who were affected by the recent leakages of pipes from Sharada irrigation water to their farm lands.
The SSG said the irrigation farmers most of whom cultivate maize would receive early ‘maize seeds’ and herbicides to cushion the effect of their lost.
