Tsav, who spoke yesterday in Makurdi, said “the police force is heavily understaffed and as a result, the soldiers have taken over their jobs and are allegedly killing innocent citizens even without provocation”.
“The involvement of soldiers in duties constitutionally meant for the police shows how unserious our leaders are. There are many school leavers roaming the streets without jobs, yet our police force is grossly under staffed. Police colleges are lying fallow; why can’t these school leavers be recruited and trained as police officers? The United Nation requires that there should be 400 civilians to one policeman. We cannot meet this ratio in Nigeria, with the present strength of our police. That is why it is necessary to recruit and train more policemen and return soldiers to the barracks,” Tsav said.
