Truck driver killed in multiple auto crash in Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified truck driver has died in a multiple auto crash on a bridge in the Ojuelegba area of Lagos State.

This is coming barely 24 hours after a truck driver and his conductor sustained severe injuries after their truck fell off the bridge at Ijora while struggling for right of way with another truck.

Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said the multiple crash involved three trucks.

Oke-Osanyintolu, said around 1.37 am on Monday, the agency’s response team met a multiple accident, involving three articulated trucks on Ojuelegba bridge.

He said the LASEMA team was returning from a recovery operation in the Ijora axis of Lagos when it encountered the accident.

According to him, the multiple accident involved two Shacman F2000 Dangote trucks, registration numbers unknown, laden with sand and a Daf truck, with registration number, EKY 93 YC laden with chicken feed.

“The Dangote truck reportedly suffered mechanical error on motion, while driving in a convoy, resulting in a sudden halt of movement leading to a crash into it from the rear by the second truck (also owned by Dangote) and the Daf truck, while on top speed.

“Unfortunately, the driver of the DAF truck, an adult male, who got trapped on impact of the multiple collision, died in the process, while his Truck Assistant escaped unscathed.

“The body of the trapped DAF truck driver has been extricated. The corpse has been handed over to SEHMU for onward transfer to the morgue and further processing” he added.

The Permanent Secretary further stated that all affected vehicles had been recovered off the bridge to the Iponri office of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
