Tricyclist, 29, faces manslaughter charge

A 29-year-old tricyclist, Moses Mpoto, who allegedly caused the death of his passenger, on Friday appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Mpoto, a resident of Badore, Ajah area of Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of manslaughter, reckless riding of his cycle and negligence.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Ben Ekundayo, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan.1, about 6.00p.m at Okera-Kekere Bus Stop, Ajah Road, Eti-Osa in Lagos.

Ekundayo said that the accused rode a tricycle with registration number LSD-930 QE, in a reckless manner and caused the death of one of his passengers, Mr Ibrahim Hamidu.

He said that one of the worn out tyres of the tricycle busted, while on speed and tumbled, adding that in the process, three passengers were injured and rushed to the hospital.

“Hamidu died in the hospital the following day from the injuries he sustained,” the prosecutor said.

According to him, the offences contravened Sections 7(1), 20, Road Traffic Act Law of Lagos State, 2012 and Section 227 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted N100, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs A.M. Olumide-Fusika, said that the accused must provide two sureties.

Olumide-Fusika said that one of them be a relative of the accused, and the other a civil servant.

The magistrate adjourned further hearing in the case until Jan. 21. (NAN)
