Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, says the country’s transport sector will play a critical role in the country’s aim to achieve its N1 trillion economy target by 2026.
The vice president stated this on Tuesday in Abuja at the ongoing National summit on transportation organised by the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIoTA) with the theme “Emerging National Governance Challenges and Prospects in Transport Modes,”
Represented by Aliyu Modibbo Umar, the vice president said “The transport sector is being revolutionised and developing countries are adopting technology to develop the sector, which is why President Tinubu has keyed into the vision of transforming the sector as it will play a critical role in achieving N1 trillion economy target.”
Speaking further, he said the Institute will play a critical role in providing expert recommendations on how to develop the rail as well as marine and blue economy sector to achieve maximum results, while adding that the eminent challenges are gradually being addressed by the government.

In his remarks, the President of CIoTA, Prince Segun Obayendo lamented the loss of over 200 lives as a result of a boat mishap in the year 2023, adding that there is a need to commence full deployment of Artificial Intelligence in air, road and waterways transportation to avert future occurrence.
He noted that “To make transportation an economically viable sector, the government cannot do it alone, as there is the need to partner with the Institute and other private sector components,”
