The movement of cows by train from the northern part of the country to the south has reduced the amount of money spent by over 100 per cent, Daily Trust has learnt.
Besides, the livestock movement recently launched by the ConnectRail Service Ltd in partnership with  Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) and supported by the NIRSAL has lessened the prices of cows in the markets, according to survey conducted by the corporation.
Thirty years after, the NRC recommenced movement of cattle from north to south on September 3 with the movement of 570 cows from Gusau, Zamfara State.
It was learnt that since the commencement of the cattle movement, no fewer than three trains fully loaded with cattle had been conveyed from the North to South.
As of the time of filing this report, another train of cows was expected from Nguru, Yobe State while another one left Gombe to Port Harcourt.
Spokesman of the Lagos District of the NRC, Mrs. Khadijat Aroyewun-Adekomaiya, told Daily Trust on Thursday that the initiative had drastically reduced the cost of moving cows by cattle traders apart from reducing the number of days the cattle usually spent on the road before arriving their destinations in the south.
Meanwhile, statistics of passengers and goods moved from Lagos district indicated that 471,752 passengers were moved through the Mass Transit Train (MTT) of the NRC from Ido to Ijoko, Ogun State and Apapa to Ijoko between July to September 2016.
