It is well known that most students of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) have cultivated the habit of late night studies, few months or weeks to the commencement of semester examinations. This has become a culture of sorts in the university.

Most students believe that it is better to study at night than during the daytime because of the series of school activities they engage in during the day. Others believe it is more conducive and less strenuous to study at night. And the number is said to be increasing daily.

Unknown to many students, late night academic activities are becoming the worst nightmares in the university. Those who engage in this practice are faced with various challenges, ranging from environmental factors to inadequate access to facilities. These factors do not give students the opportunity to study adequately, thereby jeopardising their performances.

Unfortunately, the standard of education in Nigeria has continued to fall; and students are not helping matters. BUK is not left out in this quagmire as students also face ungodly stress when trying to make sure they improve their level of knowledge. Students are made to study under unfavourable conditions and environment. It is either they study under the streetlights or in overcrowded classrooms with no adequate power. Obviously, this condition endangers the life and health of the students.

Notably, the classrooms are closed late at night and those left open usually do not have adequate electricity. This makes a lot of students to end up studying under streetlights or in courtyards, which exposes them to a lot of health risks.

The school authority should, as a matter of urgency, provide the facilities needed for adequate studies while students should act wisely.
