Traders, consumers worried over unstable prices of grains in Taraba

Consumers and grain dealers have expressed concern over the unstable price of grains in Taraba State. Findings revealed that prices kept increasing soon after harvesting and it never came down.

A trader at Mutum Biyu grains market, Musa Dauda, told Daily Trust that a 100kg bag of maize was sold at N20,000 during the beginning of harvest in November.

He said since then, prices continue to go up and as at Thursday, the market day of Mutum Biyu, the price is between N31,000 and N32,000.

He also said 100kg bag of paddy rice was sold at the beginning of harvest for N17,000 but the price now is N32,000.

Another trader in the market, Ibrahim Sule, said increase in the price has affected all farm produce, adding that in November last year, a 100kg bag of locally processed rice sold for N64,000 but today, the same bag costs N90,000.

Sule said 100kg bag of white beans, during the harvest, sold for N45,000 but is now N60,000.

He said there is the likelihood of prices of foodstuffs rising higher than what was witnessed last year.

According to him, by this period last year, 100kg bag of maize was N23,000 but this year, the same bag costs N42,000 and in some states, the price is between N48,000 and N50,000.
