Tony Momoh buried amidst tears, encomium

A former Minister of Information and a frontline journalist, Prince Tony Momoh, was Thursday laid to rest at Grail Land, Iju hills, in Ogun State, amidst tears and encomium from members of his immediate family and friends.

Mr Momoh, who served as information minister between 1986 and 1990 during the Ibrahim Babangida military regime died on Monday, February 1, 2021 at 81.

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shuaibu, described Momoh as a true Nigerian who displayed exemplary leadership qualities during his life-time as a journalist and a politician.

Shuaibu said Momoh also believed in the unity of the country and spoke about it a lot through his speeches and commentaries,

His eldest son, Abdulrasheed Momoh, while fighting back tears, said his father wrote on democracy because he wanted true democracy to work for all Nigerians.

“I think he has left a very beautiful footprint on the sands of time. He was one of the best members of human community anywhere in the word as described by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Nigerians have reasons to celebrate his life; we are not mourning him. He was so generous with his knowledge. He has so many publications to his name. He is somebody that Nigeria will miss,” he said.

Ebenezer Oyetakin, the Executive Secretary, Anti-Corruption Network, who said he had worked closely with Price Momoh, said the deceased sang and breathed Nigeria.

However, journalists were restricted from covering the burial procession while inside the Grail temple but only allowed to take pictures from far.
