Toilet etiquettes to observe in an office space

The office restroom is known to be a public space because it is used by everyone in that office, it is therefore important that such a space is always kept clean and hygienic as a dirty restroom can lead to the breeding of germs and diseases.

It is also essential that individuals follow these restroom etiquettes having in mind their comfort and the comfort of others who will use the space. Below are some etiquettes to observe while using an office restroom:

  1. Do not talk: A common error made by workers is believing the restroom is a secure space to make a call and discuss personal issues. It is not only construed as offensive but you also disturb the peace of others who may be using the stall next to you. Also, the whole office doesn’t need to know your business.
  2. Replace Toilet paper and other bathroom essentials: Always note that if you use up the tissue paper, it’s important to replace it so the next person doesn’t go through the hassle of trying to get one before they can use the restroom. If you can’t replace it by yourself, bring it to the attention of those who are in charge of such supplies.
  3. Always flush the toilet after use: It is considered ill-mannered and unpleasant to leave your mess for the next person to see. Always wait back to check and confirm that the toilet bowl has been properly flushed down before leaving the bathroom.
  4. Proper disposal of Hygiene waste: This refers to proper disposal of items such as cleaning wipes, sanitary pads, etc. it is improper to carelessly dispose of such items and can be a very disgusting sight for the next person who comes into the restroom. Such waste should be wrapped up properly and be thrown into the bin that has been placed at the toilet. Also, do not attempt to flush these items as they could clog the toilet pipe.
  5. Always Knock: Be sure to knock on the restroom door before attempting to open the door as the restroom may be occupied by another person. If the door is locked, avoid knocking multiple times and use the available restroom.
  6. Wash your hands: It doesn’t matter what you did in the restroom or how long you stayed in, always wash your hands before leaving. This is to ensure that you are free of any germs you may have come in contact with.
  7. Observe your time: A lot of times, people get carried away in restrooms by using their phones, listening to music, going through their social media etc. Always remember that you’re in a public space and might be keeping someone waiting, especially for offices that do not have enough restroom space.
  8. Close the door: This goes beyond just closing the door behind you, always make sure to hook or bolt the doors properly. This saves you from the awkwardness of having someone else walk in on you as you attend to your business.
