Tofa wasn’t just a friend but a companion – IBB

Former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has described the late Bashir Othman Tofa as not just a close friend who shared good and bad times but a companion and confidant that will forever be reckoned with.

IBB made this known at the 2nd Bashir Othman Tofa memorial lecture organised by the Kano Concerned Citizens Initiative (KCCI) in collaboration with Kano Against COVID-19 Initiative (KACOVID) with the theme; “An exemplary life” held at Dangote Business School, Bayero University, Kano on Saturday.

In a tribute sent to the event, he said, “Reflecting on a friendship that spanned over five decades, it is with a heavy heart that I pay tribute to my dear friend. Our journey together was one defined by shared joys, enduring challenges, and a bond that withstood the tests of time.

“Over the 50-plus years we traversed together, he wasn’t just a friend; he was a steadfast companion, a confidant, and a source of unwavering support. In moments of triumph, he stood by my side, celebrating victories as if they were hin own. Likewise, during times of adversity, his presence brought solace and strength, a testament to the depth of our connection.

“As a family man, he exemplified the values of love, commitment, and sacrifice. His devotion to his loved ones set a standard that left a lasting impression on me. Our shared experiences, from the joyous occasions to the more challenging ones, became threads weaving a tapestry of a friendship that transcended mere companionship.

“His profound religious beliefs added a spiritual dimension to our friendship, fostering discussions that went beyond the mundane. Through his example, I witnessed the transformative power of faith, which not only shaped his character but also became a guiding force in our shared experiences.

“In the realm of politics and business, he carved a path of distinction. His foray into polities was marked by principles, dedication to public service, and an unyielding commitment to making a positive impact. In the world of business, his entrepreneurial spirit and strategic vision not only flourished in the market but also laid the foundation for a legacy that continues to thrive.

“Today, as the Kane State Concerned Citizen Initiative organizes the 2 memorial lecture in his honour, I find solsce in the fact that his influence lives on. This event becomes a poignant opportunity for me to reminisce about the shared laughter, the deep conversations, and the countless memories that define our enduring friendship.

“While his physical presence may be absent, the resonance of his impact echoes in my heart and in the lives he touched. The lecture serves as a collective acknowledgement of the remarkable individual he was and the lasting legacy he left behind.

“As I navigate life without my cherished friend, I carry the lessons learned from him the importance of friendship, the strength derived from faith, and the transformative power of a life well-lived. In honoring his memory, I am reminded that even in his absence, our friendship remains an enduring force, shaping the person I am today.”

While the lecture saw a series of encomiums glorifying the person Tofa was, tributes took centre stage.

Speaking, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, who was represented by his Deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, said, “Late Bashir Othman Tofa dedicated his resources, time and energy to uplift the less privileged, support educational initiatives and foster economic development. His philanthropic endeavors touched the lives of countless individuals, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and generosity.

“In the world of business, Late Bashir Othman Tofa was a trailblazer. He demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit. Through his endeavors, he created employment opportunities, stimulated economic growth, and contributed to the overall development of our nation. His success in the banking sector and other business ventures remains an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and future generations.

“Late Bashir Othman Tofa’s political journey was marked by courage, integrity, and a deep love for our great nation. As a grassroots politician, he connected with the people, understood their challenges, and championed their causes. He was a courageous personality who spoke out rightly open on matters relating to public interest without fear of intimidation. His presidential aspiration under the National Republican Convention Party demonstrated his belief in a democratic Nigeria and his desire to serve the nation at the highest level.”

Earlier the Convener of the event, AB Mahmoud, SAN, who extolled the deceased said he will forever be missed as an elder statesman who lived a fulfilled life filled with patriotism and ever seeking for the development of the common man.

Delivering his keynote address virtually, a close associate of the deceased, General Martin Luther Agwai described Tofa as a peacelover, a peace builder and a generous person whose major concern was to see economic development, progress and unity of people prosper in the north and the country at large devoid of tribal or ethnic differences.

Also others who spoke including former Nigeria’s President, General Abdussalam Abubakar, United Nations Deputy Secretary General, Amina Mohammed, the 14th emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, Sarkin Shanun Kano and representative of the emir, Shehu Mohammed described him as someone who stood by the virtues of righteousness, highly intelligent and committed person while prayed his gentle soul continue to rest in peace.

Many captains of industries, influential personalities, highly placed public office holders as well as traditional leaders were in attendance at the memorial event.

Daily Trust reports that Tofa was the presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) in the June 12 1993 election. He contested against Chief MKO Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Tofa, a politician, business mogul and an author, died in the early hours of Monday, January 3, 2022, and was buried at Hajj Camp Cemetery in Kano metropolis.
