Comrade Issa Aremu, Director General, Michael Imoudo National Institute of Labour Studies (MINILS), has assured Nigerians that the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will change the country’s trajectory positively.
Aremu therefore enlisted the support of the youth especially and the citizens to take advantage of the educational reforms of the present administration to reset the country.
The MINILS DG spoke during the 2024 Nelson Mandela Day celebration held at MINILS, Ilọrin.
The United Nations declared July 18 as Nelson Mandela Day to use 67 minutes to honour his legacies globally. The inaugural edition was launched on July 18, 2009.
The 2024 event with the theme; “Nelson Mandela Day (NMD): Combating Poverty and Inequality”, was the fourth edition since the assumption of duty of Aremu as the DG.
According to him, the real sustainable solution against poverty is “mass quality affordable education”.
He recalled that the late Mandela once observed that education is the most powerful weapon to change the world.
Comrade Aremu, said the inauguration of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) by the president demonstrated his resolve to empower the youth with education to explore the limitless opportunities that abound.
While highlighting the significance of the fund, the DG noted that 170,000 applicants from universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education now have accounts with NELFUND.
He said over 110,000 of them having successfully completed the loan application process and awaiting disbursements.
“The issue is not to agonise about poverty but initiate policy initiatives such as NELFUND as the president has done to give loans at zero interest rate to the children of the poor to access higher education,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to support the Renewed Hope Agenda to improve food security, eradicate poverty/inequality, access capital and fight against corruption among others.
Secondary school students invited to honour the event were fed by MINILS and mentored with many of the most popular quotes of the late legend.
