Tinubu urges varsities to drive research for dev’t solutions

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian universities to prioritise research on solving the country’s developmental challenges.

Addressing attendees at the combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremony of the University of Uyo, Tinubu, represented by the vice chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill, emphasised that research with real-world applications can significantly improve society and enhance lives.

The president expressed concern over the limited impact of research from national and international conferences, which often remains in archives and libraries, unused.

He urged the 12,450 graduates remain in Nigeria and contribute to the nation’s progress rather than seeking opportunities abroad.

“I appeal to your sense of patriotism, urging you to resist the allure of greener pastures overseas. Together, we can make our pastures here just as vibrant, if not more so,” he said.

Highlighting the evolving needs of the modern world, President Tinubu urged universities to adapt through meaningful teaching, learning, and research that foster national progress and sustainable development.

He further noted the government’s support in establishing centres of excellence across tertiary institutions but lamented the underutilisation of research findings that are often confined to archives.

The Chancellor of Uniuyo, Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar Maje, Emir of Hadejia, commended Vice Chancellor Prof. Nyaudoh Ndaeyo for his achievements and encouraged continued progress to position the university as a leader in academic excellence.

The Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Zubairu Abdallah, echoed the need for substantial resources, political commitment, and supportive policies to enable universities to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Akwa Ibom State Governor Dr Umo Eno, a doctorate recipient, affirmed his dedication to advancing education and SMEs in the state.

His doctoral thesis, titled ‘Government and Private Sector Development: A Study of Small and Medium Enterprises in Akwa Ibom State’, reflects his belief in SMEs as a key driver of economic growth.
