President Bola Tinubu has approved the inauguration of a 37-man Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage with a mandate to recommend and look into the implementation of a new National Minimum Wage for the Country.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, said this in a letter addressed to officials of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The letter dated January 23, 2024, is titled ‘Inauguration of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage.’
While the minimum wage was last reviewed in April 2019 from N18,000 to N30,000, labour leaders in June 2023, urged the government to increase the wage from N30,000 to N200,000 to meet the current economic realities.

Akume in the letter said the inauguration will take place at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, State House, and Abuja at 12.00noon prompt on Tuesday 30th January, 2024.
The committee under the Chairmanship of Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji, a former Head of the Civil Service of the Federation cuts across Federal and state government, the private sector and organised labour.
From the Federal Government, members include Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State, Labour and Employment (Representing Hon. Minister of Labour and Employment); Mr Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget Economic Planning; Dr. Yemi Esan, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation; Dr Nnamdi Maurice Mbaeri, Permanent Secretary, GSO. OSGF and Ekpo Nta, Esq, Chairman/CEO, NSIWC, Member/Secretary.
