Tinubu, others mourn as ex-defence chief, Ogohi, dies at 76

A former Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ibrahim Ogohi, has died after a brief illness.

Family sources said he suffered from an age-related sickness for weeks before he died in his Abuja home on Sunday.

The late Ogohi was the first naval officer to become Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff and served from 1999 to 2003 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He was born in November 1948 and died in the early hours of Sunday, 30th June 2024, at the age of 76.

He has been laid to rest at his hometown in Okura Olafia, Dekina LGA of Kogi State.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, saying his services to the nation will always be remembered.

Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, in a statement on Sunday said President Tinubu also prays for the repose of the soul of the deceased and comfort to his family.

Kogi State governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, described Ogohi as an excellent military officer and a statesman who was committed to the unity and peaceful coexistence among the people of Nigeria till his last days on earth.

Equally, the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, said the former defence chief would be remembered for his positive impact and contributions to the country, and as one of the sons of Igala Land who brought the Igala kingdom to the fore in Nigeria’s leadership structure.

The Kogi State Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in the last election, Yakubu Murtala Ajaka, said Admiral Ogohi’s illustrious career was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the nation.
