Kano South senator-elect, Suleiman Kawu Sumaila (NNPP), has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against foisting leadership on the 10th National Assembly.

Briefing reporters yesterday at the National Assembly in Abuja, Kawu said only elected federal lawmakers would decide who will emerge as presiding officers in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

He said external interference in the election of the leadership of the 10th National Assembly will be resisted by majority of the federal lawmakers-elect through the instrumentality of relevant provisions of the 1999 constitution.

Similarly, a pro-democracy group, Coalition of Good Governance Network, has called for a democratic process in the election of the next National Assembly presiding officers, without resorting to intimidation or harassment of aspirants.

The group’s convener, Remi Adebayo, at a media briefing in Abuja yesterday, urged Tinubu to resist antics and desperation from interested parties to subsequently heat up the polity by dancing to the tunes of people who want their opponents arrested, harassed or prevented from accessing the hallowed chambers of the National Assembly on inauguration day.

He said, “Even as we look forward to a cordial executive-legislative relationship to drive the wheel of governance with greater impact and effectiveness, the executive and party in government must respect the independence and uniqueness of the legislative arm of government by allowing its leaders to be produced from the overall decision of the members.”
