Though Ganduje sacked me, I can’t backstab him – Yakasai

Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a former media aide to Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who was dismissed twice by his boss has said he will never backstab the governor even though they belong to different parties.

Daily Trust reports that Yakasai was dismissed on two occasions by Ganduje for his critical comment on the federal government’s handling of security situations in the country.

But responding to a question on why he had never spoken ill of the governor despite the acrimonious end to their working relationship, Yakasai said he enjoyed a father-son relationship with Ganduje in addition to six years of working together.

He added that the governor did not dismiss him because he was critical of the state government but because of his comments against the federal government, insinuating that his dismissal was to appease higher authorities.

Yakasai, who is now contesting to succeed Ganduje as governor on the platform of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), revealed this on Wednesday at the 2023 Dialogue Series organised by the Kano state Correspondent Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

“I cannot backstab my boss just because of some political differences. I don’t believe in that kind of politics. We had six good years and he had to let me go because of the unfavourable statements I made not against his government but against the federal government,” he said.

Yakasai, who is popularly known as Dawisu on the microblogging site, Twitter, also debunked insinuations that the governor was the one sponsoring him to contest on the ticket of PRP so as to make it easy for the candidate of the governor’s party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to emerge victorious.

Speaking on his plan if voted as governor in 2023, the PRP candidate said his agenda would be structured on “Vision 2033”, which is to make Kano the centre of commercial excellence in West Africa.

He said the 10-year plan would focus on seven areas: economic growth, innovative infrastructure, education, healthcare, environment, public sector reform, and peace and security.

He added that bringing governance down to the people at the grassroot would be at the forefront of achieving the plan.
